What are 8 new ideas that 2014 batch IAS officers presented to the PM? A snapshot

One of the eight presentations
LAST Thursday, a few IAS officers of 2014 batch gave presentation to an audience that included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among others. Why shouldn’t there be a satellite-based mining surveillance system when the number of illegal mining cases jumped to 97,149 in 2014-15 — an increase of 40%, from 2009-10? Also, why not having e-court system on a mission mode when there are 2.7 crore pending cases in lower courts alone? Here are the few ideas — DBT, e-Courts, health, MyGoV, satellite-based mining surveillance system, Swachh Bharat, tourism and waste exchange etc.— that the officers gave and PMO noted:

Attend NITI vice-chairman’s session “without fail”: DoPT asks young IAS after show-causing 37 for not attending a session with Debroy

HAS a section young IAS officers of 2014 batch posted as assistant secretaries to the government of India taken life too easy? After as many as 37 of them were found missing in a session with NITI Aayog Member and economist Bibek Debroy last week — something prominently highlighted in national newspapers and for which absentees were show-caused — the DoPT did not want to take any more chance to ensure they attend a session addressed by NITI Vice-chairman Arvind Panagariya. In what could be described as quite an unusual office memorandum dated September 12, the DoPT asked the assistant secretaries posted in various Central government ministries and departments that “they have to attend the aforesaid function without fail”, making the two words—“without fail” in bold letters. Not just that, they were asked to  be present in the function “on time”, again highlighting…

This is the second year in a row when young IAS officers will work at the Centre on central deputation and not directly move to their states from LBSNAA —the Mussoorie-based IAS academy where the officers are being trained. “The officers of the 2014 batch on expiry of the phase-II training in LBSNAA on 29.07.2016 will be placed at...

Does “sir culture” hinder openness and innovation in government? Young officers say, yes it does

FOR many a young professional joining as IAS, the first challenge in adapting to the sarkari culture is the very use of the word “sir”. Many wonder, why can’t a two-year senior officer be called by the first name or by his or her surname? So, it’s not surprising that one of the young IAS officers, currently undergoing training in Mussoorie academy, took to a social media site last week to say “too much formalism” in IAS is not good for the fraternity, adding that the "sir culture" is against innovation in governance.
