Harsh Vardhan Shringla: 10 things to know about India’s new ambassador to US


Harsh Vardhan Shringla, 1984 batch Indian Foreign Service officer, presently India’s high commissioner to Bangladesh, has been appointed as the next ambassador of India to the United States of America. Here are 10 things to know about India’s new ambassador to US:

1. Harsh Vardhan Shringla is a 1984 batch IFS officer.
2. Two of his most recent postings in 34-year-long diplomatic career have been Ambassador of India to Thailand, and then to Bangladesh. 
3. Shringla also served in UNESCO, United Nations (New York), Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (both in Vietnam), and also in Israel and South Africa.
4. In the MEA, Shringla served as joint secretary (director general) responsible for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Maldives. 
5. He also headed the United Nations Political and SAARC divisions in the MEA. 
6. The officer also served as director of the northern division dealing with Nepal and Bhutan and as deputy secretary of the Europe west division. 
7. A product of New Delhi’s St. Stephen's college, he had worked in the private sector and public sectors before getting selected as the Indian Foreign Service. 
8. Among his published papers include the ones on conflict resolution, economic diplomacy and Indian diaspora. 
9. Shringla can speak French, Vietnamese and Nepalese, in addition to English and Hindi. 
10. Married to Hemal Shringla, the couple has one son.
In another development, 1986 batch IFS -- Riva Ganguly Das, presently Director General in Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), has been appointed as the next high commissioner of India to Bangladesh, according to a press statement issued by the MEA today.
