THE IAS Association in a social media post on Tuesday said, threatening young IAS officers working in the field is not acceptable, after a video purportedly showing BJP MLA Uday Bhan Singh threatening Agra's Kirawali sub-divisional magistrate, Garima Singh, went viral. In the video, MLA can be heard saying, “Aapko maloom nahi main vidhayak hun (Don’t you know I am an MLA)? Meri taakat ka ehsaas nahi hai (You don’t realise my power).” The IAS Association in a Tweet said:
“Threatening young IAS officers working in the field is not acceptable. IAS officers across the country work under challenging circumstances and ensure Rule of Law is upheld. Proud of Garima Singh IAS for standing firm and not giving in to intimidation. #IAS”.
After the MLA threatened the officers, his followers present there began sloganeering against the SDM. They said, “SDM murdabad” (Down with the SDM).
The problem arose when a large number of farmers gathered to collect cheques as compensation for the loss of their crops due to a hailstorm in April. But it was only a rumour that the cheques were being distributed in the SDM office. The verification process for compensation was still on in a number of cases, the SDM later told media personnel present there, the video of which is also available in the internet.
Meanwhile, Agra’s district magistrate, NG Ravi Kumar, ordered an inquiry into the incident.
