PV Ramesh, a 1985 batch Andhra Pradesh cadre IAS, took over as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Rural Electrification Corporation Limited (REC). A trained physician from the Christian medical college and hospital, Vellore, Ramesh was serving at his cadre as special chief secretary, environment, forest, science and technology and also…development commissioner before shifting his base to New Delhi to take up the new job of heading the central power PSU that provides financial assistance in the field of generation, transmission and distribution in the power sector.
Hailing from Andhra Pradesh itself, this 57-year-old IAS officer held some key posts in the state such as principal secretary — finance, health and family welfare and commissioner of industries. He also headed the state reorganization department that reorganized the state of Andhra Pradesh, according to a statement issued by REC. But the key feature of Ramesh’s career as an administrator was his 13-year-long innings in United Nations Organization, where he was instrumental in formulating national development strategies and plans, programme design, supervision, monitoring, evaluation, fund administration and programme management. He was also a staff member of IFAD, UNOPS and UNFPA. Ramesh got a chance to work in several nations across Asia Pacific and Africa and also served in Europe and UNOPS headquarters located in New York. In UNO, he held positions such as country programme manager for Asia Pacific division of IFAD/UNOPS, senior portfolio manager for West Asia, acting director of UNOPS regional office for Southern Eastern Africa and country representative for UNFPA to Afghanistan and senior advisor to finance minister of Afghanistan, just to name a few.
Among the short in-service trainings that Ramesh had as IAS included administrative reforms in government, leadership development programme, fiscal policy and macro economic management etc.Also, Ramesh served as non-whole time director at Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (until June 2016) and as director of Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Ltd (until October 2016).
