Ashish Tiwari: Investment banker-turned IPS who initiates celebration of birthdays of police personnel together

Happy Birth Day To You, Happy Birth Day To You...
VARANASI police’s initiative of celebrating birthdays of all police personnel together on 1st of every month has been a talking-point among the Uttar Pradesh cops and their families. On December 1, all those police personnel in Varanasi whose birthday fell in November, came together in one platform to cut a birthday cake — an initiative that is expected to boost camaraderie among the cops in the holy city and beyond. But whose idea was it? The IPS Association in a social media platform congratulated investment banker-turned police officer…
Ashish Tiwari for this “noble initiative”. Tiwari, 33, hails from Madhya Pradesh, and was allotted Uttar Pradesh cadre when got selected for Indian Police Service in 2012. Earlier, he was selected for Indian Revenue Service -Income Tax and served as Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax between 2011 and 2012.
A product of Kendriya Vidyalaya (Central School), Tiwari is an M.Tech in computer science from IIT-Kharagpur.
After completing his education, Tiwari first became an investment banker before shifting to income-tax and policing. In 2007, he worked as an analyst in Lehman Brothers, a New York-headquartered global financial services firm which came into news for going bankrupt, unfolding a global financial crisis in late 2000s.
Between 2008 and 2010, Tiwari worked for Nomura, a Japanese financial company that acquired Lehman Brothers’ equities units in Asia and Europe. Then, Tiwari joined the government, first as an IRS-IT and then as IPS.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring state of Madhya Pradesh, the Director General of Police has recently directed all district police heads to grant a day off to cops up to the level of deputy SP on their birthdays and wedding anniversaries. It was first experimented by Burhanpur SP Anil Singh Kushwah in August this year in his district. DGP Rishi Shukla liked the idea and directed replication of Burhanpur’s experimentation in all districts of the state.
