Know more about I-T dept employee Debashree Mazumdar, a member of Indian women’s relay team in Rio Olympics

INCOME-TAX Parivar has something special to look forward to, in the current Rio Olympics. Yes, Debashree Mazumdar — a Kolkata-based I-T employee and member of silver-winning Indian relay team at the 2015 Asian Championship, will compete in 4x400m relay in Rio. For the 25-year-old Indian athlete, it will be her first Olympics. Debashree was recruited by Kolkata Income-Tax department in 2011, and since then…
the department has been encouraging her to spend most of her time in practicing and bring laurels to the department and to the nation. No wonder, she became the best athlete in All India Central Revenue Sports Meet (CRSCB). She then got trained at Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala which is Asia's largest sports institute housed in an earlier royal palace.
Debashree was selected for representing India in the Commonwealth Games 2014, held at Glasgow, UK. India did not however manage to get any medal. But she continued her perseverance and became a part of the silver-winning Indian relay team at the 2015 Asian Championship.
Prior to her selection for Rio Olympics, there were some doubts whether she would make it to the Rio because of her some injury, but finally, she was given a berth in the national team heading for Rio.
She was attending the national camp in Bengaluru when the big news of her selection for Rio arrived. It was in July 2009, Debashree who hails from Nadia district of West Bengal, came into the limelight first, when she set a record of West Bengal athletics meet in the girls’ under-20 400 meter race. She did it in a record 55.4 seconds during the 59th state athletics meet held at Kolkata’s Salt Lake stadium.
Two years later, Income-Tax department recruited her.
In one of the Rio Olympics qualifications —IAAF World Championships in Beijing in August, 2015 —India’s replay team that included Jisna Mathew, Tintu Luka and Poovamma apart from Debashree Majumdar, demonstrated a superb performance (3:29.08).
Athletics competitions in Rio Olympics will begin only on August 12. Income Tax Sports and Recreational Club of West Bengal recently created big hoardings to congratulate Debashree for her selection and conveying best wishes for her Rio run.
Do join BoI in congratulating Debashree and post your best wishes in the comment box below.
