Know Your Babu: Did you know new DeitY secretary JS Deepak championed a successful 3G auction?

JS Deepak, 1982 batch IAS
FOLLOWING the 2G spectrum scam during the UPA regime, there was one bureaucrat in the ministry of telecom who designed and conducted the 3G AND Wi-Max spectrum auctions that fetched the Central government whopping about Rs 1,06,260 crore (USD 24.5 billion). It was the first time spectrum was auctioned in India in a transparent manner and that too through a massive e‐auction route. The bureaucrat concerned was JS Deepak, then a JS (joint secretary) in the department of telecom. As the 2G scam was so over-powering, no one actually paid much attention to the good work done by the…

On Friday, this 1982 batch IAS who is currently an additional secretary in the department of commerce was appointed as secretary in the department of electronics and IT (DeitY). The post was lying vacant after incumbent RS Sharma of 1978 batch IAS moved to telecom regulator, TRAI as its chairman.
An MSc degree in electronics from Banglore University and MBA from prestigious IIM, Ahmedebad (with specialization in marketing and finance), Deepak began his career in IAS as an executive magistrate in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh before becoming SDM in Saharanpur. 1. Whats a big deal in this job. Any other officer specially from the most honest sevice i.e. IRS (IT) would have done this financial matter better and would have fetched more revenue for the government.

    1. Haha.....true....very deep and insightful comment.
