More about the 2010 batch “Durga IAS”, her education, marriage, cadre change

Durga Shakti Nagpal (left) along with some of her batch-mates
BUREAUCRATS in corridors of power in Delhi and elsewhere on Tuesday talked about a young woman IAS officer who a prominent newspaper described as “Durga IAS” after she had dared to take on notorious sand mafia of UP's Gautam Budh Nagar, adjoining the capital city of Delhi. As reported, 28-year-old Durga Shakti Nagpal is in the forefront of a fight against unauthorized dredging along Yamuna and Hindon rivers,  located in Western UP. BoI here gives a glimpse of Ms Nagpal, her educational background, her marriage and cadre change...
After the story of this brave civil servant got prominently displayed in page 1 of India's largest circulated English newspaper, The Times of India, we tweeted it. A reader responded immediately by saying: “The senior IAS have no guts... wish everyone was like Durga IAS.” Another reader wanted to know whether she is active on Twitter or not. In fact, the aggressive posture by the Durga IAS, who has already involved officials of the revenue, police and transport departments in her fight against sand mafia, has resulted into the arrest of 15 alleged offenders. In the last three months, fine to the tune of about Rs 82 lakh were also collected.
Belonging to 2010 batch, Ms Nagpal was ranked 20th in the civil services exam in 2009. She did her engineering in computer before joining the IAS. Nagpal hails from Delhi, and was first posted in Punjab. Only in August last year, the government transferred her from Punjab cadre to Uttar Pradesh cadre on the ground of marriage to 2011 batch IAS, Abhishek Singh. Singh, 30, was specialized in management accountancy before joining the IAS. He belongs to the state of Chhattisgarh.

  7. Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Gautam Budh Nagar Durga Shakti Nagpal who took on UP's sand mining mafia head on, was suspended yesterday. Her seniors took action against her for ordering to demolish a wall at a place of worship. UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav tweeted: "It is an administrative decision." On Sunday, many common men and women aired their anger in social media sites as Nagpal's suspension would embolden those who are behind illegal mining and also discourage bright and honest officers.

  9. 2009 batch IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal's story on the cover page of a national daily has created the sparkle in the bureaucracy. In her first posting she has established that if you have the courage you can achieve the target. Courageous officers like her are few. The way she acted on the sand mafias and curbs the illegal mining it's a remarkable effort. There are many bureaucrats who have done remarkable job in initial stage but after a single political thrash their confidence level automatically low down. On many instances their senior bureaucrats has created the adverse conditions and due that junior bureaucrats forced to compromise. In Durga's case she has uses her extreme power and ruthlessly crushed the sand mafia. From her point of view she was absolutely correct and acted well. Unfortunately she has not been been taken seniors in the confidence and in the mean time she has given the orders to break down the Dharmik Stahthal in Kadarpur village. It's a sensitive decision she has to inform to local MLA and Collector prior to demolition order this was her individual decision leads her to suspension. She is daring, honest, obstinate and has a fire to remove corruption and illegal business. But her suspension is harsh punishment and I say that her fraternity senior officers has given mislead information to CM due to that she faced the suspension. Now the UP IAS officers union firmly put the Durga's case in front of Chief Minister and at any cost her suspension must revoked.

  10. Samajwadi party is filled with goondas and mafias. As per their declaration, all the SP men should have wealth worth 50 lakhs in next five years by any way. We cannot expect any thing new from them. Children's specially girl students don't have proper toilets in school and Akhilesh yadav is distributing laptops. Just think if proper school infrastructure is created by this, it would have been much better for the school going children. Anyhow what we can expect from an engineer CM who has got his education from a private engineering college and cannot speak in English for 5 minutes.

  14. In an era when the spine less bureaucracy is compromising ethics for minor personal gain like a posting in a good district, Durga's courage is commendable. The Secretary and the District magistrate who obeyed the illegal order of suspension should be blacklisted and boycotted by the association. But unfortunately the self preserving gene of IAS cadre will not do this. Akhtar - A fellow bureaucrat
