IAS coaching centres reach out to NRI children; UPSC exams to get tougher

Dream Run: A section of successful IAS of 2011 batch
IAS coaching centres have now jumped into the “brain gain” bandwagon wooing children of rich NRIs to enrol and appear for civil services examinations. For many Indians living abroad, Indian bureaucracy is a symbol of power and prestige. Also, working in rural pockets of India is a fantasy for many of those rich kids living abroad.
A number of news sites have recently carried
an agency (IANS) story which talked to a number of IAS coaching institutes, and also a member of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to get a correct picture on this relatively new phenomenon. The trigger was the recent foray of one of the coaching institutes, Chanakya IAS Academy, to hold an interactive session in Dubai mainly to woo NRI civil services aspirants.
Any citizen of India can appear for civil services examinations which means the children of Non Resident Indians do qualify to take the plunge. But UPSC currently does not have any centres abroad. The NRI aspirants, however, can camp in any major cities in India to appear for the examinations held at multiple layers: prelims, mains and then interview. The interview is held only in New Delhi.
Though the million dollar IAS coaching industry is reaching out to the NRI population mainly to increase their topline in a saturated market, this exercise may create awareness and help more NRI children taking the UPSC examinations more seriously. It also means more competition ahead for those who are studying 16 hours a day in Patna, Guwahati or Chennai, dreaming to crack arguably the toughest exam in India.

  1. I am not surprised if more number of NRI children appear for UPSC. They may clear the civils too. But will they stay in India and serve as an IAS for 35 years?

  11. More competition means more talented individuals getting the crown. Yes, NRIs should be allowed to appear the exam because they are after all Indians. So there shouldn't be any partiality for appearing the exam. IAS coaching centers are attracting them to jump into the bandwagon, but there should be clear and transparent motive to teach the students as per the expectation and helping them to achieve their target. Students should research about the coaching centers and take reviews from the old students to know exactly their coaching techniques and how much its impacting in shaping knowledge.
