1982 batch IAS Rohit Nandan may become Air India’s new Maharaja

Rohit Nandan, a 1982 batch UP cadre IAS, is likely to be appointed as Air India’s new chairman and managing director (CMD) in place of 1978 batch IAS Arvind Jadhav who could be made additional secretary in revenue department. According to sources, Nandan may initially be appointed as an interim CMD of the troubled national carrier. An MA in history and MBA from Britain’s University of Hull, Nandan has been a joint secretary in the civil aviation ministry from December 2009.
Who can do the magic?
Nandan has been in good books of the cabinet secretariat for quite sometime, as he was handpicked by former cabinet secretary KM Chandrasekhar as one of the 10 bureaucrat commanders to do the last-minute fire-fighting ahead of the last year’s Commonwealth Games. He was also given additional charge of the post of Commissioner of Security in the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). Nandan has also served as a director in the board of Pawan Hans Helicopter Ltd.

  1. It is beyond the competence of IAS bureaucrats to reform ailing AIR INDIA. Rather, they would further shove it deeper in the dump. This hit and trail is going on for last more than a decade and bail out is given to AIR INDIA from time to time out of tax payer’s money. A civil servant in Indian milieu could easily be influenced by his political masters and can stoop to any low to please them. Hence, they are unable to handle situation in which AIR INDIA is entangled right now. The government should have taken a lesson from its repeated failures. Some professional from civil aviation sector should have been considered and appointed as AIR INDIA Chief with some hope to bring some improvement in the situation. The future look depressing and bleak for the Maharaja.

  2. Yes, Rohit Nandan was actually appointed as CMD, Air India for 3 years. Let me paste the release that has come quite late on Friday. It says: "In exercise of the powers conferred under Article 133, read with Article 117, of the Articles of Association of the Air India Limited (AIL), the President is pleased to appoint Shri Rohit Nandan, IAS (UP:82), Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation as Chairman and Managing Director, Air India Limited on deputation for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier, from the date of taking over Charge."

  4. Please donot let old crooks back into air india . They did nothing but politic and promote their own cronies. Consult Mr Sunil Arora EX-CMD, Mr Ravi Memon Ex-CMD. Bring fresh talent and groom second generation officers to bring life. Have target based appraisal. Analyse who got promoted how many time and what they achieved to get there.

  5. The best choice could have been Mr. D. Jagatheesa Pandian IAS 1981 Gujarat Cadre who can truly change the face of the airlines with his genuine commitment as he has proved when he turned around a dull company like GSPCL as a money spinner for Gujarat Government. He can be inducted to make things work for Air India and it can be flying again.

  6. With Rohit Nandan's appointment, a number of Arvind Jhadav's right-hand men have already resigned. They are Jadhav's adviser V Srikrishnanm, his OSD P Easwarchandran and chief information officer Kamaljeet Rattan. Rattan has reportedly received an annual package of Rs 45 lakh.

  7. I believe one should not generalise his/her opinion about all the bureaucrats! Before one comments on the integrity of Mr. Rohit Nandan, he should go through his track record. He has started off by turning down lavish club membership for himself and his counterpart. He has also kept blocking of Business class seats for VVIPs in Air India at the least priority! These initial steps are harbinger of change for the behemoth airline.

  8. how can a tenure in aviation ministry make a babu eligible for a complex role of running an airline , its the dominance of sr babus in decision making and spine less political leadership that such torture is being inflicted on the national carrier. while babus may be doing good jobs in running cooperatives or other manufacturing concerns of the government,,,,they have proved to be disasters for airindia on a consisitent basis...then why continue to waste taxpayers money...god save the country

Rattan has reportedly received an annual package of Rs 45 lakh. Consultants, esp from dubious backgrounds are still running amok in Air India with annual salaries over crores of rupees. This with public money being poured into the bottomless pit called AI !!

  10. Why can't Govt think beyond IAS for PSUs who are perpetually dragging them to doom. IAS officers are trained to be bosses of colonial hangover and not managers of change or business.
