1977 batch IAS Debendranath Sarangi is new Tamil Nadu chief secretary

Debendranath Sarangi, a 1977 batch Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer, has never been on Central deputation. Now, Sarangi has been the choice of chief minister J Jayalalithaa to become the new chief secretary of Tamil Nadu.

Sarangi has superceded at least three officers who are from 1975 and 1976 batches. An MA in political science and MSc in economics (UK), Sarangi is a well respected Oriya officer in the state. Unlike many Tamil Nadu officers, he is friendly to the media and is politically neutral.

According to media reports, Sarangi is married to a Tamilian who works in private sector. His son is also in corporate sector while his daughter is pursuing her studies in the US.

Sarangi is a fitness freak and is often spotted in tennis courts.
