Know Your Babu: 10 things about Delhi’s new chief secretary Vijay Kumar Dev


Vijay Kumar Dev, 1987 batch IAS AGMUT cadre IAS officer, was appointed on Thursday as the new chief secretary of Delhi. He will succeed Anshu Prakash who was allegedly attacked by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators at a meeting held in chief minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence in February this year, leading to a prolonged tussle between the AAP leaders and the IAS officers. Here below are 10 things you may like to know about Vijay Kumar Dev:

1. A 1987 batch AGMUT cadre IAS, Vijay Kumar Dev originally belongs to Himachal Pradesh.
2. His mother tongue is Punjabi, but he knows four other languages — English, Hindi, Sanskrit and Urdu, according to DoPT records. 
3. He completed his B.Tech from IIT-Delhi before getting into IAS.   
4. He was till recently serving as the chief electoral officer in Delhi. Earlier, he also served as the deputy election commissioner in the Election Commission of India, Chandigarh.
5. In 2017-18, Dev worked as Director General in the ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship at the rank of a GOI additional secretary. 
6. Among other important positions in Delhi include the posts of CMD in Delhi Transport Corporation in 2011 and prior to that as chairman in Delhi State Civil Supplies Corporation Ltd. 
7. As a younger AGMUT cadre officer, he served as collectors in various parts of the country — in the districts of Daman, Diu and East Delhi. 
8. Between 1997 and 1999, and then again between 2009 and 2011, he was posted in the Northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. 
9. He undertook short-term training programmes on infrastructure development and institutional financing from IIM-Ahmedabad and on ethical issues from Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie.
10. Dev will retire from the service on March 31, 2023.
