Rise and Fall of Sanjay Gupta: Who’s this IAS, businessman and Gujarat’s metro man, now behind bar?

GUJARAT CID on Thursday arrested Sanjay Gupta, an ex-IAS officer of 1985 batch who had served as executive chairman of the state-owned Metrolink Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA), for his alleged involvement in a forged bills scam of Rs 113 crore. According to reports, the case was filed by the current regime of MEGA and the CID arrested him based on the findings of a probe by additional DGP of CID Crime Ms Meera Ram Niwas. Here are 10 things about Gupta who left IAS to start a group that owns six luxury hotels, two golf properties among others. Later in 2011, he surprised many a sitting IAS and contender when he was picked up to build Gujarat’s first metro rail venture. More here:

1. His full name is Sanjay Raghunath Prasad Gupta. A former Gujarat cadre IAS of 1985 batch, he left service in 2002 when he was given an inconsequential post in Gujarat Rajya Sangeet Natak Academy.
2. After leaving the service, Gupta joined Adani Group as CEO (Infrastructure).
3. He then set up his own luxury hotels called Cambay under the umbrella of Neesa Group. His high point was when his group touched Rs 2,000 crore turnover with about 3,000 employees on its payrolls.
4. Some of his group companies are Neesa Leisure, Neesa Infrastructure, Neesa Agritech and Food, Orient Spa, Neesa Technologies, Neesa Financial Services, Neesa Township and Properties and Cambay SEZ Hotels.
5.  A civil engineer from IIT Roorkee and Fellow from Wharton School, Gupta was MD of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) between 1998 and 2002 where he was instrumental in increasing the turnover of the company from US $4 million to US $75 million.
6. He was instrumental in establishing an intra-Gujarat gas pipeline company called Gujarat State Petronet.
7. As many as 40 properties of the hotel and resort chain owned him were raided by income-tax department in September 2010. The searches were conducted in the group’s establishments located in Mumbai, Jaipur, Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad, and few other cities, but details of the seizure were not known.
8. In 2011, Gupta surprised many a sitting IAS and contender when he was picked up for building Gujarat’s first metro rail venture called MEGA (Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad). He was made executive chairman of Mega, a Gujarat government project of building a cost-effective metro rail project purely on an elevated track.
9. Two years later, he left the key post to concentrate on his business. Gupta in September 2013 launched a private equity fund, Let India Fly Foreover (LIFE) with fund size of Rs 250-300 crore.
10. He also launched a 24-hour digital Hindi news channel under the umbrella of Neesa Group. The channel is named Jano Duniya.

  2. He has unmatched brilliance and greed for money. When he started his career as bureaucrat he came in contact with Adani's. He had fascinated and passionate for money. He enjoyed the power and learned how to made money through power. He succeeds. He faced Income Tax raid and other legal hassles. But day by day he used to these kind of setbacks. For money he took short cut to gathered money. Finally trapped in the clutches of police and landed in jail. This is the visible example of a brilliance and crime combo.

  4. There is nothing shocking or surprising in this exposure. We all know that this class(IAS) indulge the most in corrupt practices and amass wealth to take care of their seven generations as they apprehend that their next and next generations will be deaf and dumb . They do it with utmost impunity as there is no fear of getting caught. CBI/ACB/CVC fails to prosecute them since the agencies in the given set up report to them . Despite indulgence , and subsequent criminal complaints, many of them still reach the level of Secretary to Govt of India. They make the rule , ensure their implementation only for the others but breaks them with utmost impunity when any member of its fraternity is involved. The principle of you scratch my back and I will yours is predominant . Surely it will be incorrect to paint the entire IAS community with the same brush. Majority of them are excellent, honest and law abiding but since the laws are made by them they become helpless when it comes to punishing a colleague. A lady IAS from Guj against whom serious allegations of corruption(siphoning of crores of govt) were levelled and CBI registered a complaint, permission of investigation /FIR were declined to the agency while the same lady suspecting another non IAS officer of writing complaints against her, was booked by CBI on the allegation of claiming self lease of Rs.10000/- per month in lieu of HRA of Rs.6000/- while having his own house, prosecuted on the complaint of this lady IAS , This lady uninterruptedly rose/occupied the position of Secretary while the poor officer lost his job at the hands of this lady IAS.
Whatever good (booking of corrupt IAS) is happening is due to the change of guard. Modi Government is doing an excellent job and has succeeded in inculcating fear in the minds of wrong doers be it IAS.

  5. "What you sow is what you reap" goes the famous saying. Sanjay Gupta has finally got, what he long-deserved. The curse of many Neesa Group employees, who left the group because of non-payment of salaries (for two months and more) have led Sanjay Gupta to his doom.

  6. The Rise and Fall of such persons is because of politicians since they are the law makers keeping their properties untouched. India for some time needs to be under a good, well intensioned and greatly advised dictator by keeping , changing the rules. Such persons should be brought on road and face the music by the investors, if the legal authorities fail to do their jobs properly in providing justice to ordinary people.
