IPS Narendra Kumar killed for taking on illegal mining in MP; his IAS wife pregnant

Narendra Kumar, IPS
IN A shocking incident on the day of Holi, the festival of colours, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of 2009 batch Narendra Kumar was allegedly killed by mining mafia. The 30-year-old sub-divisional officer, posted at Banmore town in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena district, was trying to stop a tractor carrying illegal stones. But the driver, one Manoj Gujjar, ran over him. Kumar succumbed to his injuries. The driver was later taken into custody.
Narendra Kumar’s wife Madhurani Teotia, originally hailing from Delhi, is a 2008 batch MP cadre IAS. She was a doctor by profession before joining the IAS cadre. Mrs Teotia, posted in Gwalior, is expecting a baby.
The killing of the police officer has made the entire bureaucracy in MP angry and upset. But they have remained silent so far. Deputy inspector general (DIG) of Chambal Range DP Gupta however told a section of media that illegal quarrying had recently increased and Kumar was at the forefront in taking it on.
The state Congress has too taken up the issue. Leader of the Opposition Ajay Singh in a statement took a potshot at prevailing law and order situation in Madhya Pradesh “where people are so emboldened that they can think of killing an IPS officer”. The issue of illegal mining cropped up in Madhya Pradesh too, but that did not get the kind of attention as it received in Orissa, Karnataka or Goa.
As the killing of the IPS officer took place on the day of Holi, one BoI reader informed immediately: “Narendra Kumar of 2012 reminds me of a similar “Holi” day killing of Vinod Mehta IPS (71 batch Bengal cadre) on 16th March 1984”. In fact, many alleged that Mehta was killed by a mob in broad daylight in Kolkata as his fellow policemen remained inactive and intentionally let the killing take place.

  1. It will demotivate bright young guys to join police service if state government brushes the incident aside as an "accident" and Narendra Kumar's fellow IPS succumb to such an advice. It's a sad day. A proper inquiry is needed. Why did a particular police officer who took on illegal mining was run over by the tractor. His father claims it's a well planned conspiracy. There should be independent enquiry.

    1. It is not the job of an ips officer to stop vehicles that are carrying crushers. He could have been careful. Just because they have been empowered to taken on criminals they wouldnot show this bravado on broad day light. It could happen so the driver might have fumbled and lost control of the vehicle.

  4. You need to acknowledge now that mining menace is a national issue. Needs national intervention. The politician, bureaucrats' nexus with mining lords must get dismantled.

  17. If a poor fruit vendor in Tunis can self immolate create the "Arab Spring" - what is preventing that to happen in India? Killing of an IPS officer, as pointed out by the commentators above is not a simple thing! What that means to the common man?

  18. Its matter of shame for the nation that a young, energetic and honest officer was killed on the behest of some who never wanted that Mr Narender Kumar IPS should cross their road. We as a nation stand behind Mrs Narender Kumar for her fight for justice. The sacrifice of the valiant soldier of mother India should not go in waste.

  19. Is not Narendra Kumar killed due to his own folly? It might be correct that there is mining Mafia in stone quarries and there have been tendencies to do mining much beyond the leased area. But how does officer know that the tractor was carrying stones which were mined in illegal area? It appears that due to his young vigor and energy this accident has happened. This perhaps is not a case of killing a senior police officer by design.

  20. This is very unfortunate. Illegal mining should be stopped so there would be less harm to people. These greedy men are all trying to be on top so they are just killing people that stop their way. mining equipment

  21. It is a pre planned murder which prima facile evidence shows and the worst part still pending for the justice.
