  5. Hygiene could be about dead bodies as well. The Vedic Indian considers the Ganges holy, and allows half burnt corpses to drift in the river, in transit to heaven. Our idea of the sublime itself is ridiculous.

Or consider the ubiquitous office tea-boy who brings you and your friends chai, three of his snot-laced fingers dipping deep into the glasses. Or the open sewers. Or the dhobi sneezing into the laundered linen and bringing it back, all neatly folded? The list is endless.

Bhanot is right about the cultural relativity of cleanliness. The fact is that the whites are a cleaner race, and their idea of sanitation as a system institutionally superior.

We may resort to the argument that it is the pressure of urbanisation that is at the heart of the matter. But nothing quite explains why we have more mobiles than toilets. Clearly, it’s not so much a question of resources as wrong prioritization both at the institutional and individual levels.

The Delhi Games is a lesson in basics. The dirty rooms of the Games Village, the stained beds, and the filthy toilets could be partly explained by rogue dogs; or by vandal construction workers.

The first is a security breach. The other raises the question: why were the workers not given adequate toilets or shower rooms on site?

The Games authorities, like the middleclass that now finds itself aggrieved at the national shame, never spared a moment to think: where do workers ****? Why, they will manage! There’s always the Yamuna! And there was at one point more than 400,000 labourers on CWG sites.

Neither the Organisation Committee nor Sheila Dikshit gave a shit to the workers’ dignity. And look what they got in return: the brown man’s toilet.

  6. Why should government officials who retire from senior levels are provided lucrative postings in international agencies? They can influence the levers of power in the few years after retirement and once their influence begins to recede, no body wants to even look at them. There should be a clear policy that they can not hold any position after retirement since what they will do after retirement will only be to use their influence for things that are not straight.

  8. Dear Madam,

There is a very big scam brewing in the ENT community.

This is nothing when compared to the other kickbacks highlighted in the press earlier.

The new one is Cochlear Implantation. Do you know that for every implant a doctor gets upto Rs. 2,00,000!!!!! They also form a closed group so that they alone enjoy this ill gotten money. Have you also wondered how come only private/corporate/family run hospitals do most of the implants??!! How come Govt institutions are not doing these and are not being supplied. Even those who were doing these procedures have been denied implants!!! And if at all they continue it is with the support of Pvt. Institutions

Govt. money, philanthropy money, tax payers money are being misused and pocketed. These people are also taken on fully paid world tours along with family. The passports of these cochlear implant surgeons stands proof for this.

The virtual world is abuzz with this.

Govt. Schemes especially in South are being misused and children implanted without any indication!! It is also the only procedure where the Govt pays the entire amount of Rs. 7-12 Lakhs!!!! How many life threatening procedures can be done with this money. Think...

Newspapers carry the stories of children in front page and philanthropists donate but most of the donations are siphoned off!

We talk about mining mafia/sand mafia/2G scams etc., but this affecting the child/human being and his/her future I believe is the biggest scams and I am sure if there is to be an investigation/report by media/awareness amongst public and accountability then many a name whom we respect will fall down since they are all dependent on this ill gotten money.

This is the biggest of scams. There should be an awareness created and we have to prevent this. A deaf person is already suffering added to this is the financial burden/false hope shattering them, all for the money and also for getting free cars/houses/hospitals. If only this benefit was passed on to the patients…

  9. Dear Madam Secretary,
Good afternoon! We here in Trivandrum are committed to rehabilitating as many mentally retarded women and female kids as we can in a shelter-cum-training home of some kind.I happen to be associated with the female Director of this proposed home as a paid employee and BDM(Business Development Manager) External Funding.
The mentally retarded girls and women here in India need a protecting hand as such they are exploited in various ways.
Prevailing laws are weak and not implemented even in cases where they are used for menial jobs or sexually abused.
Could you please direct us to seek some assistance from the concerned section of the Health Ministry in this connection?
Please send your Ministry's reply to me @ tesol.sadaboy@yahoo.com or to Prof.Dr.Sadasivan, Post Box 2805,Trivandrum 695013,Kerala.
THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES!Jai Hind!
